At Model Cities, we are part of an ecosystem of housing access. Together, with partners like Housing in Action, we provide support for our neighbors on their journey to housing stability. In May, Housing in Action (formerly Urban Homeworks) was the victim of a targeted cyber fraud. In this attack, hackers broke into their bank accounts, stealing all of the organization’s cash assets—over $800,000.
Their team immediately began working with the FBI and local authorities, learning that it is unlikely the stolen funds could be recovered. A devastating loss for Housing in Action and for communities we all serve. These dollars were queued up to repair dignified rental homes, to rehab and build new homes for affordable sale, and to provide down payment assistance for first-time homebuyers.
Housing in Action is resilient, working hard to recover from this horrible crime, pursuing all avenues available to them to restore the funds. In addition to securing the operational dollars to run the organization and programs, they intend to replace the opportunities that were stolen through this theft. So far they have raised upwards of $570,000 towards the $800,000 that was stolen.
We are lending our voice to amplify their call for support during this challenging time.
Will you lend a hand to help restore opportunities stolen from our shared community? Your support can help minimize the impact of this theft on our neighbor’s homes and stability.
