Safe Space Shelter Advocate – On-Call

 

Job Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Safe Space Program Manager, the Shelter Advocate will have a regular presence in the shelter and provide on-site support to participants to ensure basic needs are met while they stay at our shelter. The Shelter Advocate- On Call will coordinate and facilitate sleeping arrangements of participants, distribute snacks, beverages and hygiene supplies, as needed. The Shelter Advocate- On Call will ensure bedding is laundered daily, data and intake information is completed for input into the Homeless Management Information System and/or other reporting systems and carries out established shelter processes and procedures in order to maintain a positive environment for participants and staff. Shelter Advocate- On Call must be able to participate in monthly staff meetings and other routine staff check-ins to ensure effective shelter operations.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and ability to work with diverse populations, including those who may be experiencing homelessness, chemical dependency, unstable housing, and/or mental illness, required.
  • Experience working with low-income individuals, people from various economic, racial/ethnic, and cultural backgrounds and those who are homeless desired.
  • Flexible, organized, self-motivated with ability to work independently.
  • Possess good written and verbal communication skills and be able to communicate with staff, participants and referral partner in person, on the telephone and in writing.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25lbs on an occasional basis.
  • Patience, flexibility, ability to listen, assertiveness and compassion.
  • Ability to effectively handle crisis situations and informed decisions while under pressure.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have at least one year of previous experience providing direct social services.
  • Previous experience working in a nonprofit agency desired.
  • The shifts are awake overnights, primarily between the hours of 9:30 pm to 9:30 am.
  • Must have the ability to work overnights on weekdays and weekends.
  • Driver’s license and criminal background check required.

Compensation: $20.00 per hour (no benefits or paid leave)
